About St. Mary's School

ImageFounded in 1898 as a parish school affiliated with St. Mary's Church, St. Mary's is a Roman Catholic school serving students in grades preschool through eight.  While we are a parochial school of the Springfield Diocese, we welcome students of all religions to our enrollment.

We are located in East Central Illinois in the city of Paris, fifteen miles from the Indiana state line.

The purpose of St. Mary's School is to provide a comprehensive program based on best teaching practices and brain research related to learning.  Our goal is to create an environment with three strands:  climate, community and curriculum.

CLIMATE We work at creating a non-threatening and spiritual climate.  In this environment the students learn and practice Lifeskills/Lifelong Guidelines as part of their character education.

COMMUNITY  Children are taught that building and maintaining community through relationships, collaboration and communication create responsible citizens.  Behavior expectations are taught through literacy, learning clubs, and community circles.

CURRICULUM  Our curriculum is designed to be meaningful and provide lifelong learning.  Children are provided first hand experiences that connect them to the real world.  Adequate time is given for practice and understanding skills and content.  Multiple means of instructing and assessing student progress is practiced.

St. Mary's School is fully accredited by the state of Illinois and staffs only certified teachers, who are dedicated to academic excellence.  We offer a supervised before/after school care program, participate in the Federal Hot Lunch Program, and provide bus service through the public school system.  In addition to academics, we offer full art and music programs, after school clubs, and sports for boys and girls.

LUNCH ON THE SQUARE

Volunteers still needed !  We need people to grill, serve, set-up and clean-up.  At least 4 more adults and 6 older students (grades 5-8).  Volunteers would need to be available from 10:30-1:30.

Friday, June 6 will be our 5th annual "Lunch on the Square" from 11:00am - 1:30pm on the courthouse lawn.  This event is open to the public and we'll be grilling pork burgers as a fundraiser.  The last two years we have made over $600 in 2 1/2 hours!

In addition, we need all families to provide one large pan of brownies to be served for dessert.  These can be delivered to the school the morning of 6/6 or directly to the courthouse lawn by 10:30.

Please contact the office or send in a note if you or your children can serve in any way.

A look to the future- St. Mary*s School technology committee met several times this past year. Thanks to one very large donation and two more donations, we will be providing St. Mary*s School with state of the art technology. All classrooms will be getting Smart Boards installed over the summer.  A Smart Board is a multimedia tool that combines a laptop computer with a highly durable, write-on projection screen. User-friendly software allows teachers to present lessons that incorporate elements from other computer programs and the Internet. They will enable teachers to better address multiple learning styles and enhance the classroom experience for all students. The greatest advantage to having a Smart Board in the classroom is that, whether the child's learning style is auditory, visual, hands-on or interactive, every student can benefit from its use.

This summer our bathrooms will be updated. The major improvements include the floors being refurbished, the stalls replaced and new sinks.

In June the teachers and I will be attending the second strand of C.L.A.S.S.- Literacy Plan. This strand focuses intently on creating exceptional readers and writers. We will receive instruction on curriculum mapping, how to engage students in literacy, how to differentiate instruction in literacy and how to assess and evaluate literacy.
